Traveling for the holidays? Make sure your skin arrives glowing

It sucks that for an event like a holiday where you are reuniting with far-flung loved ones you have to go through something as grueling as travel before you can reach the main event. Air travel makes it even worse, not just for your stress and energy levels, but for your skin. Renee Rouleau of Renee Rouleau Skin Care is here to help with her tips for holiday travel.

To get your skin flight ready, take some precautionary steps. “Since the cabin of airplanes have low humidity, you must load your skin up with as much hydration and protection as possible,” Rouleau said. “Apply a skin serum under sunscreen to deliver moisture deep within the layers of the skin while providing an occlusive seal to help the skin retain its moisture. Look for serums using ingredients like Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone and Hyaluronic Acid. Renée Rouleau Intensive Firming Serum uses these ingredients and is ideal while flying.” You might also try Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster.

As for the sunscreen, it’s especially important because when you’re in a plane, you’re closer to the sun’s damaging rays! Remember windows don’t protect you from sun damage.

As for in flight care, there’s actually not a lot you can do with products. “For years, skin care experts have suggested to mist your skin with a hydrating spray to keep it moist. This is a no-no, for sure! According to Rouleau “the worst thing you can do is spray those misters on the skin. Why? Because since the air is so dry, it looks for water wherever it can get it and since water attracts water, when you spray the skin it takes all the water from the deep layers in the skin and gets evaporated into the dry air! The result is even drier skin. Your best bet is to leave the skin alone.”

It is a good idea, as always, to drink a lot of water.

As for post flight, Rouleau recommends cleansing skin and applying a deeply hydrating mask as soon as you arrive at your destination, even if you feel like crashing instead. “It’s important to add back essential hydration and brighten the skin from post-flight dullness. Renée Rouleau Azulene Gel Mask is both calming and deeply hydrating to ensure your skin gets the moisture it needs. It feels so cool and refreshing on the skin after traveling. Leave on 15 minutes, rinse well and apply moisturizer.”

Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Mask is also a good bet, as it conditions skin with Vitamins A, E and C, Evening Primrose Oil and honey to bind moisture to the skin. If you prefer oil-free products, try the Skin Hydrating Masque instead.
