To Hat or Not to Hat This Summer?

Laura JaneThis article was written by Laura Jane on June 25, 2008 - Laura Jane is a 21 year old graduate from Wales, with too many opinions and too little time! She loves fashion and is obsessed with celebrities!

Most of us love our summer accessories like sunglasses, sandals and headscarves, but the thought of wearing a hat strikes fear in many! Don’t think you can pull off serious headgear? These celebs did!

CZJ Fergie

I will admit, I have always been a little scared of hats! Even the baseball caps that everyone wears as a kid. I’m just not a hat person. But with so many stylish celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sienna Miller, Paris Hilton, Fergie and Jennifer Lopez all spotting various kinds of hats recently the idea of finding one to suit me is very appealing.

One of the most popular type of hats among Hollywood’s hottest right now are the trilbys. Sienna Miller made the look a trend and not Paris Hilton, Ashlee Simpson and Fergie among others are all often seen wearing various colours of trilbys.

Black Eyed Peas’ very own fashion icon Fergie, was spotted wearing a fashionable grey trilby with a leather jacket and skinny jeans combo whilst arriving at LAX airport in Los Angeles yesterday. The great thing about trilbys is that they can look edgy and masculine with an outfit like Fergie’s or can be worn with a floral dress for a pretty, girly look.

Catherine Zeta-Jones was seen arriving at London’s Heathrow Airport last week wearing a more dramatic alternative to the trilby, a classic straw hat with an oversized black bow. The classic, feminine hat suits Catherine’s lady like look but certaintly isn’t the easiest kind of head gear to pull off. Try only if you’re very confident and happy to stand out!

There certainly are benefits to hats. They update any summer outfit and give you a fashion forward look, they hide a multitude of hair disasters, and of course they keep you safe in the sun if you’re headed to the beach, a music festival or just doing a long day of shopping in the sun. Other popular styles include cowboy hats as often seen on Jessica Simpson and Ashley Olsen, or the wide-brimmed 70’s style floppy hats as favoured by Jennifer Lopez.

So will you be wearing a hat this summer? The thought still scares me but I think I’m gonna head to the high street and try a few options out for size! If not, I can always follow in Nicole Richie’s footsteps and keep covered up with funky head scarves!
