Add some bounce to your typical pony

Monday, July 19th, 2010

This retro pony tail from the Louis Vuitton show would be perfect for this Sunday night’s premiere of the fourth season of Mad Men on AMC. Blow stylist Naeemah Carre helps recreate the look.

First, apply Blow’s Ready Set Blow Express Blow Dry Lotion to hair and blow dry with a medium round boar bristle brush. Add Blow Up Thickening Mist for extra bounce and curl.

Spray Blow’s Blow Out Spray Serious Non-Stick Hair Spray all over hair for sheen and a soft hold and tease hair at the crown.

“Gather hair into a high pony right below the crown using a non-tugging ponytail holder,” Carre said. “Wrap a small section of hair around the base of your ponytail to hide the ponytail holder. To take your retro look to the next level you can even wrap a pretty scarf or ribbon around your pony!”

Very Betty Draper!

Tired of your ponytail already? Beat the heat in new styles

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

The heat certainly hit early this year, so you may already be sick of that summer hairstyling staple – the ponytail. Here are a few twists (literal and figurative) to keep the look fresh.

The Rope Braid

Bumble and Bumble created the rope braid at left for the Emanuel Ungaro. First slick hair down and smooth into a ponytail. Then create two sections and twist them together securing with bobby pins and a hair elastic.

Messy Textured Pony

The messy textured look worn high is from the Nasty Gal online catalog and features texturized hair secured with an elastic. A piece of hair is then wrapped around the elastic to cover the band and secured with a bobby pin.

Messy Low Pony

Another texturized low ponytail showed up in the J. Crew lookbook. This is created in much the same way as the textured pony above, just worn low so it’s a lot easier to pull off. Pull out a few pieces around your hairline to go with the textured vibe.

Backstage Beauty New York Fashion Week: Tory Burch Spring 2010

Tory Burch, love her or hate her, is a go-to designer for fresh-faced affluent or upwardly mobile 20-somethings of a certain attractive milieu. So a perky, stick straight, center-parted pony is just perfect for spring and for Tory. You can see above how the beauty look for her Spring 2010 fashion presentation (more installation than runway show) went from concept to fruition at Bryant Park in New York.

“The look is going to be young, fresh, youthful, earthy,” said Redken lead hair stylist Yannick D. He and his team created a strong silhouette with a center part. “When hair is pulled back like this it looks so young and fresh on these girls,” he commented, pointing out the face-lifting affects of hair pulled up tight from the sides of the face. (Because you know, 17-year-old fashion models could use the help.)

To get the airy texture of the pony, hair was blown dry using Redken Layer Lift 07 Length Elevating Spray Gel and sectioned on the side for a decorative affect.

“It’s really about keeping it fresh,” Yannick said. “A pony is just a pony until you do something special to it.” Amen.

Get the perfect pony every time

Reese Witherspoon ponytail

Sometimes bangs and a ponytail can look a little too little girlish, but here Reese Witherspoon keeps it grown up and sophisticated. Try it on second-day hair so that layered pieces are less likely to fall out (hair is most slippery when freshly washed). If you choose to use a little hairspray to keep this one up, avoid getting any on your bangs.

If you want to take a little more trouble, you can straighten hair first to get truly smooth and frizz-free locks. To get it more piecey, spray with a salt water spray like Fudge Salt Spray.

If you don’t have bangs, you could try a big curly pony instead of the straight version.

“This look is modern and a bit flirty,” says Kate Beckinsale’s hairstylist, Adir Abergel.

Try misting Matrix Biolage Thermal-Active Setting Spray on wet hair and drying with a round brush.

“Once the hair is dry, backcomb the front of the hair and spray with hairspray to create body and a more modern look,” says Abergel. Then pull the sides tightly back and secure the high ponytail with an elastic.
