Silhouettes Are Changing!

Laura JaneThis article was written by Laura Jane on April 13, 2008 - Laura Jane is a 21 year old graduate from Wales, with too many opinions and too little time! She loves fashion and is obsessed with celebrities!

Last year was the year of the trapeze dress, when we could all feel safe underneath big, tent-style dresses. However this year, things are a-changing! The fitted dress is back in fashion and I have some of the best on the high street, plus tips on how to wear them!

Chanelle Prev

Ex-Big Brother contestent Chanelle Hayes was seen exiting the celeb favourite, Funky Buddha club in London last week looking very sultry in a navy blue, fitted, ruched mini dress with silver straps. She is the latest in many celebs spotted showing off their figures in curve hugging dresses, instead of hiding everything under a baggy trapeze dress.

M&S Body ShapersWhile the look is certainly sexier than the old silhouette, it’s not easy to wear! For those of us not blessed with perfect figures like Chanelle, there are a few tips you can try to make sure you look your best in this hard-to-wear style!

First of all, as Trinny and Susannah would no doubt advise, make sure you have the foundation right with a Firm Control Magic Cup Body Shaper from Marks and Spencer for £35. It will cinch in your waist, flatten your tummy and shape your bum, leaving you with a sleek, lump and bump free silhouette. How fantastic!

And for those ladies blessed with a larger chest, M&S also do a version that comes in DD-G cups for £39.50. Both have removal, mulit-way straps, so whether you’re wearing a strapless, halter neck or one-shoulder dress, you’re covered.

This will give you a great basis so that any dress you wear will look better.

Next, if you going to be bearing your legs (and arms, and shoulders etc) your skin needs to be lookinLBDsg gorgeous. Firstly scrub off all of winter’s dull dry skin with an exfoliator such as Skintruth’s Body Scrub for £8.95 which uses Dead Sea Salt for a strong treatment leaving skin bright and smooth.

You’ll also of course need Hempz Body Butter for £12.50 which provides intense moisture and renews the skin.

And finally, everyone knows bronzed skin looks slimmer and sexier so try the Fake Bake Mousse for £19.99 which is a self-tan that will give you a streak-free, long-lasting tan without the risk of skin-cancer and premature ageing!

So now your body is all ready, time to try on some dresses! There are fab ones all over the high-street right now so you really are spoiled for choice.

Of course there are the classic LBD’s like the fashionable off-the-shoulder dress with cute little silver straps from River Island for 24.99 and the classic strappy Body Con dress from Miss Selfridge for £45 which will last you for years through Straplessto nourish your skin with a moisturiser such as the any fashion season. It really is a wardrobe staple.

For the ultimate summer party look try a strapless bandeau style fitted dress like the curve hugging, black foil dress from Miss Selfridge for £35 with a gold sheen and a daring key-hole detail. Or if you want a bit of colour, you can try blue like Chanelle with a satin, corset style mini dress form ASOS for £45 in blue-grey with chic embellished bust cups.

All these dresses are perfect for clubbing or parties but how about that more special occassion?? Well although big, flirty prom dresses are cute and are also in fashion right now, if you’d like to stand out in the crowd, show off your shape in a glamorous, fitted, cocktail dress.

Oasis seems to be the best for these kinds of dresses. My favourites are the drape satin bandeau dress for £90 which comes in red, blue or black with an embellished waist and unusual neckline. I also love the strapless Int bow back dress with a ruched bust line for £85 which comes in fuscia pink and black.

So many choices, so little money!! Anyway if you’re brave enough, put away those Oasis Cocktail Dressesloose dresses and big skirts and try something a little hotter, and use my hints and tips to make sure you look great. Oh and of course, the outfit wouldn’t be complete without a pair of nude, peep toe pumps to make those pins look longer!
