Lisa Shepherd on the Oscars

oscars

We’ve already heard about who won what at the Oscars, but most people are more concerned with who wore what and most importantly what was everyone’s hair like. The 80th annual ceremony, held in Hollywood was all about glamour as the celebrities opted for splashes of red on outfits, lips and of course the carpet.  One-shoulder dresses where definitely hot property this year and were teamed with glossy curls and ponytails for the ultimate A-List style. Hair Colour Doctor and Channel 4’s Ten Years Younger hair colour expert, Lisa Shepherd is certainly no stranger when it comes to working with the celebrities or creating A-list looks.

So she’s provided us with her opinion on who won what in the hairstyle stakes this year:

marion cotillard

Best Brunettte goes to Marion Cotillard

French actress Marion Cotillard was lucky enough to win the best actress award and she also wins best brunette in my style stakes.

Marion shows off how brown hair should be, rich, smooth and super shiny. Her hair oozes health due to the deep chocolate brown colour she has used on her hair. This shade not only looks gorgeous, but also helps to bring out your best features, such as Marion’s eyes and mily tone of her skin.

She’s complimented her colour with an array of soft curls, all falling over one shoulder. These are best achieved with a hot curling wand. Try using different size barrels for a more natural look and finish with hair spray.

katherine heigel

Best Blonde goes to Katherine Heigel

At first glance you would be forgiven for mistaking Katherine for Marilyn Monroe, with her retro blonde curls and red lips.

She definitely captured the essence of the evening, going for high glamour with this hairstyle. Katherine’s hair is a sumptuous golden blonde, which is a great colour for creating shine. She’s opted for big curls and flicks, best created by using large rollers, which have added volume and that irresistible old Hollywood glamour style.

To add extra shine to her hair Katherine probably finished off her style with a strong hair spray and a good shine spray, such as Clynol Gloss shine spray (RRP £6.30 150ml).

anne hathaway

Best Style goes to Anne Hathaway

Devil wears Prada actress Anne Hathaway stuck to classic Hollywood style for her dress, but opted for an up to date loose ponytail for her hair.

This style is perfect for Anne as she wore a fussy dress and needed something simple to avoid looking over the top.

Ponytails are set to be big this year and Anne shows off perfectly how they should be done - Loose and casual on top with big curls at the back.

To get the look, firstly put some curls throughout the ends of your hair using a curling wand. Then, by using your fingers, softly scrape back your hair into a halfway high ponytail. Don’t worry if you create some bumps and imperfections at the top of your head, it’s supposed to look casual!!

tilda swinton

Worst Style goes to Tilda Swinton

Did someone forget to tell Tilda that she was attending the Oscars and not doing her daily shop at Tesco?

Loose ponytails are hot for the season, but not this rough scrapped back/no effort style. Her lack of makeup and shapeless dress only highlights the fact that she’s gone to no effort on her hair!

If you’re like Tilda and don’t like spending time on your hair, keep it simple by running the straightening irons through it, finish off with a few drops of serum and your hair will look beautiful and will have taken no time out of your day at all!

colin farrell

Product Over User goes to Colin Farrell

Ladies be warned! Colin Farrell shows of perfectly what too many products on long hair can do!

It looks to me as if Colin has attempted the sleek look and has been over generous with the serum.By all means use serum; it’s fabulous for adding shine to your hair and smoothing out frizz. But you only need 2-3 drops of this or else you’ll look like a Colin… not a good look.

Blonde Bombshells rule the Red Carpet

Red might have been the predominant frock colour at last night’s Oscars ceremony, however, according to top colourist Lisa Shepherd it was the Blondes that stole the show in the hair colour stakes!

“For me the blondes really stole the show but for me there were three that really stood out as the new spring blonde trend.”

Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett and Rene Zellwegger

This ‘new’ blonde is very creamy pale, but with a softness that ensures a really flattering shade on different skin tones.  I like to call it Oatmeal blonde, it is almost beige, but lighter and much prettier.  This colour suits all ages whether in your 30’s 40’s or even 60’s

They key to creating this blonde look is the variety of tones all in a full head colour.  Says Lisa “This colour is a block or all over colour – but done in a really clever way”  First of all you weave out highlights and use a lightener to get them to a pale creamy blonde.  Whilst those are still developing in the packets you use two different blonde shades to paint alternatively on the rest of the hair in between the packets”   This gives you a full head colour, but without a flat look”

It sounds complicated, but it is really effective and surprisingly low maintenance once you have had it done.

“This method ensures that you can cover any grey (great for more mature clients) yet because we use a variety of tones, you don’t get a harsh re-growth that you get if you just used lots of highlights”

Lisa Shepherd is one of the countries leading colourists and is affectionately called the Hair Colour Doctor.  She is the newly appointed Hair Colour Expert on Channel 4’s 10 Years Younger where she will shortly been seen transforming some of the worst hair colour disasters the programme has ever seen!
