The biggest hair trend amongst the more fashion-forward at The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Met Gala last night seems to be natural, not-too-fussy hair – even in the updos. Sure, there was a fair amount of typically polished red-carpet styles, but those that deserved the most attention were a little disheveled and never too perfect.
One of our favorite examples is January Jones, above in Yves Saint Laurent. To go with her somewhat risk-taking dress, she went with a more avant garde version of the classic French twist. While a French twist is often associated with a very polished, retro look like that of Grace Kelly, Jones’ was more tousled rocker than that. Especially when combined with her makeup. Mark Townsend created her hair look.
“This year I worked with the incredible January Jones for the Met Costume Institute Gala. I was so inspired by her Yves Saint Laurent dress and by the incredible detail; the dress was truly a work of art,” Townsend said. “It was very classic but completely modern, so I wanted January’s hair to feel the same.”
Starting with wet hair, Townsend sprayed on a heat protector and shine enhancing product, considering all the heat damage January’s tresses have to go through on the set of Mad Men. Try Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide.
“Next I applied Dove Body & Lift Volumizing Mousse to give hold without becoming too stiff, and I blow-dried with a round brush. I backcombed the roots on the top section of her hair for volume,” Townsend said. You could also use L’Oreal Professionnel Volume Expand Leave-In-Mousse.
“To achieve the over-sized french twist, I backcombed all the hair in the back before securing the twist,” he said. “Then I took the top section of hair and ran a small amount of Dove Frizz Control Taming Cream through her hair to tame flyaways and create texture at the same time. I ran the length of the hair from the section to the right of the french twist to give the whole look a little bit of a rock and roll edge and secured with a few bobby pins.” L’Oreal Professionnel Techni.art Liss Control is another great frizz-taming option.
While tousled and a little undone, Jones’ hair was still very put together. For something even more bohemian we can look to Kate Hudson – no surprise there! The startlet attended the gala in Stella McCartney with the designer and their other BFF Liv Tyler. Her hair is very reminiscent of Diane Kruger’s at the Oscars so I think it’s safe to say this trend is here to stay.
David Babaii for Living Proof said the inspiration for the do was a day spent sun bathing in San Tropez. First, you’ll want to pump up hair by rubbing a thickener like TIGI Love Peace & The Planet Freak of Nature Volumizer and Thickener between fingers and then applying from root to shaft. Babaii then rough dried Hudson’s hair for even more volume and texture. Easy so far!
After creating a side part, Babaii wove a braid along the side of Hudson’s face and gathered all the hair back into a low bun at the nape of the neck. He pulled the braid back with the rest of the hair for an easy vibe.
