New York Fashion Week: Soft, feminine hair at Jason Wu

Friday, February 12th, 2010

The hair at Jason Wu’s Fall 2010 New York Fashion Week show was very pretty, swept back in a braided knot.

Lead Aveda hairstylist Odil described the look as “something feminine and easy, something a woman could do for day or evening.”

Hair was started with a casual center part, and smoothed with Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener. It was then “attached in a very soft way with an elastic, very innocent, soft, natural with a touch of sophistication.”

The look was finished off with a new Aveda hairspray debuting this June called Control Force, which Odil said was very efficient and would last all day.

She also said Wu’s collection was “fabulous, not pretentious, his clothes are easy to wear and you feel fabulous in them.”

Backstage Beauty at New York Fashion Week: Badgley Mischka Spring 2010

Badgley Mischka hair collage

Badgley Mischka is always one of the most glamorous and exciting shows of New York Fashion Week. Always classic and always stunning, the designers didn’t dissapoint this season with gorgeous red party frocks and lots of fantastic beading and detail work. Redken key stylist Peter Gray kept hair clean and sculptural to match the polished pieces.

Celebs chanel iman shots

The hair look, which included a very sculptural origami-like twist on the bun, was inspired by a 1950s Jetsons vibe. I chatted with Gray while he was finishing up Chanel Iman’s style, above right.

“There were a lot of scalloped tops, the tops go down, so let’s make the hair go up,” Gray said. “It’s modern and funky, but uses classical techniques.”  To create the style, the team used Redken Guts and the new Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream Mousse.

Gray was the first to admit this isn’t the most achievable look to copy at home.

“It’s aspirational, it’s what the red carpet is all about, taking it to another level, a fantasy,” he said.

redken-blondes-1

If there’s ever a time for blondes, summer is it. The newest addition to the Redken Color Expert team, Tracey Cunningham is Redken’s Creative Consultant for Color and Trend Expert. what it takes to create bold, high-fashion blondes from the coolest platinum to subtle champagne highlights.

“There are literally no limits. I can use Redken’s Blonde Glam Collection on a dark brunette like Jennifer Lopez to add rich, luminous tones or on a naturally light-haired client like Cameron Diaz to create that pefect cool neutral blonde. Bright, light shades are the must have haircolor this summer,” Cunningham said.

For ultra-light, ultra conditioned locks try Blonde Glam Pure Lightening Cream.

“Think Cameron Diaz.” Cunningham said. ”I add highlights for dimension and a beachy, lived-in, radiant summer look!  For styling blondes with short cuts, I love water wax 03  shine defining pomade. It gives you a separated, glossy finish that  really brings out platinum tones.”

For a cooler, shimmering blonde the Blonde Glam Haircolor collection is your ticket to a Molly Sims inspired color.

“Shine is also a sought-after feature this summer; it is important to have to shine to make your color look healthier and richer,” Cunningham said. ”Cool blondes look best when they have a hint of shine. Just smooth on a little outshine 01 anti-frizz polishing milk to give hair a satiny finish.”

And of course, to maintain your blonde you’ll want to use shampoo, conditioner, shine treatment and deep conditioner from the Blonde Glam collection found here.

Coming soon to Girlznight – new Redken Color Extend Sun

Friday, May 1st, 2009

redken-color-extend-sunJust in time for the extra stress summer sun and swimming can do to your hair, Redken’s come out with new Redken Color Extend Sun.

“At our salon in Miami, we often see clients with damaged hair from being out in the sun or water,” said Rodney Cutler, owner of Cutler/Redken Salons. “Many of them are not aware that they can protect and correct existing damage with the right products! It’s essential to protect your hair while out in the sun.”

UV rays can strip away the hair cuticle, dulling the hair, making it rougher and more prone to frizz and flyaways. It can fade hair color both chemical and natural (eek!) and pool chemicals and sea salt cause drying and increased vulnerability. And I think all blondes have had a summer or two of green hair from too much time in the pool.

“While our clients are not always on the beach or in the pool, they are constantly in the California sun,” said Kaz Amor, Redken hair consultant and principle at the Warren-Tricomi Los Angeles Salon. “This daily exposure effects their haircolor and the quality of hair causing much dryness and brassiness. We always try to stress daily UV protection for hair, and now we can recommend specific products for our clients to use.”

So the customers in this warm-weather climes have sort of served as the research pool for those of us who only have to deal with most of this in the summer. And the result is new After-Sun Shampoo, After-Sun Mask and Sparkling Shield. The products contain Hydra-Shield Complex which provides long-lasting, broad-spectrum protection against UV rays while rebalancing moisture in sun-stressed tresses leaving hair shiny, silky and smooth. It remains effective even when the formula is rinsed out. Mango Oil and Ceramide prevent dryness and strengthen and repair damaged areas.

The After-Sun Shampoo is designed to remove salt, chlorine, and minerals and keeps haircolor looking healthy and vibrant while the mask helps reverse existing damage.

“With these products, our clients can maintain their haircolor longer and restore hair to be smooth, silky and healthy while still enjoying everyday life in the sun,” Amor said. “I especially love the moisturizing effects of the After-Sun Mask.”

I’m particularly excited about the Sparkling Shield. I’ve always protected my mostly blonde hair with special products in the summer, so this is getting thrown in my beach bag for sure.

Look for these products to debut on Girlznight soon!

Lighten up this summer with blonding shampoos

redken-blonde-brilliance

I’ll admit it. My highlights are a victim of the recession. Luckily the sun is on its way to help me out, but more than that there are a whole plethora of blonding shampoos and conditioners out there to help you lighten up without breaking the bank.

KMS California Color Vitality Blonde Treatment has a UV filter and optical brightener while L’Oreal Professional Shine Blonde products neutralizes yellow tones, protects color and adds shine.

Redken Blonde Glam Pure Pearl goes the extra distance with actual color depositing deep conditioners to brighten and enhance highlights.

To get the look above start with Redken Blonde Glam Shampoo and Conditioner for color and shine.

Apply a small amount of Redken Satinwear Blow-dry Lotion to damp hair and blow-dry with a boar-bristle brush starting at your nape and working your way up.

After hair is dry, take 2″ sections, starting at the nape, and lightly spray with a setting spray like this one from Matrix Biolage. Use a large-barrel iron to create curls concentrating on mid-shaft and ends, leaving the top smooth. Work your way up your head, brick-laying the curls on top of one another.

Let hair cool completely. Rub a small amount of Blonde Glam Crystal Flash between your palms and run through mid-shaft and ends of curls for separation.

Voila! Blonde, bomb-shell hair!
