Beauty Inspiration – The Runaways Biopic

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

The Runwaways

I wouldn’t try to recreate the feathered hair or “rock and roll mullet” – look what happened to Kristin Stewart. But, late 70’s – 80’s makeup is awesomely experimental and unafraid of color, and The Runaways Biopic appears to try to emulate it down to every last streak of blush. Joan Jett and the original band are seen above, and then you can check out Kristin Stewart and Dakota Fanning in a teaser preview for the movie here.

To attempt this look, I advise what I do with any bold or experimental look – one feature at a time. Don’t do the cheeks and the eyes and a bold lip. The super contoured blush is probably the hardest to pull off. We’re used to looking for blush that mimics the natural color of the flush of our cheeks. Not so in the late 70’s!

Cheeks

I think a blusher stick like NARS The Multiple is ideal for creating this streaky look (see Dakota Fanning in the trailer). Again, it’s hard to even find colors like the ones they used back then, but I think your best bets for The Multiple are Malibu or Maui. Apply the blush heavily from the apples of your cheek slanted up your cheek bone to the outside of your eye. Then blend down to just under your cheekbone.

Lips

The lips are a little easier to create. Pick the loudest, most obnoxious dark pink shade you can find and make it matte. Try Bed Head Girls Just Want It Lipstick in Fun. It’s more moisturizing than any of the formulas they might have used back then, but you don’t want to destroy your lips in this process.

Eyes

Your first thought is blue eye shadow, no? Check out the awesome blue and teal in this Bed Head Quad Shadow – perfect for what we’re going for. Apply all the way from lid to brow bone, accentuating the crease of the eye. Use a wet flat brush to apply the same color as eyeliner as well.

Traveling for the holidays? Make sure your skin arrives glowing

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

It sucks that for an event like a holiday where you are reuniting with far-flung loved ones you have to go through something as grueling as travel before you can reach the main event. Air travel makes it even worse, not just for your stress and energy levels, but for your skin. Renee Rouleau of Renee Rouleau Skin Care is here to help with her tips for holiday travel.

To get your skin flight ready, take some precautionary steps. “Since the cabin of airplanes have low humidity, you must load your skin up with as much hydration and protection as possible,” Rouleau said. “Apply a skin serum under sunscreen to deliver moisture deep within the layers of the skin while providing an occlusive seal to help the skin retain its moisture. Look for serums using ingredients like Dimethicone, Cyclomethicone and Hyaluronic Acid. Renée Rouleau Intensive Firming Serum uses these ingredients and is ideal while flying.” You might also try Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Booster.

As for the sunscreen, it’s especially important because when you’re in a plane, you’re closer to the sun’s damaging rays! Remember windows don’t protect you from sun damage.

As for in flight care, there’s actually not a lot you can do with products. “For years, skin care experts have suggested to mist your skin with a hydrating spray to keep it moist. This is a no-no, for sure! According to Rouleau “the worst thing you can do is spray those misters on the skin. Why? Because since the air is so dry, it looks for water wherever it can get it and since water attracts water, when you spray the skin it takes all the water from the deep layers in the skin and gets evaporated into the dry air! The result is even drier skin. Your best bet is to leave the skin alone.”

It is a good idea, as always, to drink a lot of water.

As for post flight, Rouleau recommends cleansing skin and applying a deeply hydrating mask as soon as you arrive at your destination, even if you feel like crashing instead. “It’s important to add back essential hydration and brighten the skin from post-flight dullness. Renée Rouleau Azulene Gel Mask is both calming and deeply hydrating to ensure your skin gets the moisture it needs. It feels so cool and refreshing on the skin after traveling. Leave on 15 minutes, rinse well and apply moisturizer.”

Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Mask is also a good bet, as it conditions skin with Vitamins A, E and C, Evening Primrose Oil and honey to bind moisture to the skin. If you prefer oil-free products, try the Skin Hydrating Masque instead.

‘Gone is the day of the perfect updo’ – whew, we could never get it anyway

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Redken guidoIf red carpet appearances aren’t a part of your life, then weddings and holidays are probably when you pull out your updo skills (or head to the salon) most often. Trying to do it at home may seem less daunting this party season with the words of Redken Creative Consultant Guido Palau echoing in your ears:  “Gone is the day of the perfect updo.”

Guido, who is seen at left, says that the classic updo shapes like the twist are more modern and stylish when executed with less precision and unexpected textures.

“I tried to create a lot of variation on what real women – not just 16-year-old models – can wear,” he said of recent runway styles he has created. “If a piece falls out or bobby pins are visible, all the better.”

He also laments the cookie cutter long waves and hair extensions most of Hollywood is sporting these days. Serena hair may be in, but it doesn’t mean it will make you look like Serena.

One great messy updo was recently spotted by The Girls In The Beauty Department blog on Glamour.com. To get the texture you need for hairstyles like this, try KMS California hair play texture blast or the hair spray I see constantly backstage at New York Fashion Week – Redken Workforce hair spray. The trick when using a regular hairspray like this that’s already in your bathroom as a texturizer is to spray it on after trying hair and before styling, then you can use it as you would normally use hair spray when finished styling as well.

Get Isla Fischer’s red carpet look!

isla-fischer

Isla Fischer looks cool and red carpet casual at the L.A. Bruno premiere. She got the look with mark cosmetics and their celebrity makeup artist Mai Quynh.

“Isla’s Stella McCartney dress was sweet, flirty and 60’s inspired. She accessorized with rose gold shoes and super cool gold jewelry, so we decided to keep her makeup fun,” Quynh said. “For Isla’s eyes, I started by using mark I-Mark Custom Pick Eyeshadow in Corset, applying it with the mark Eyeliner Brush. I then smudged Corset along her top and bottom lashes, staying very close to the lash line. Then I applied mark Get in Line Waterproof Hook Up Liquid Eyeliner and lined the top and bottom of her lash line, connecting the two lines and winging it upwards. To finish, I applied two coats of mark Lash Splash Waterproof Hook Up Mascara in Black.”

She also wanted to give Isla a summer glow. “I applied mark Glow Xpert Face Shimmer in Candle Glo above her cheekbones, using the mark Foundation Brush. I then applied mark Bronze Pro Bronzing Powder in Bronze, using the mark Blush Brush, to her forehead, cheeks and chin. To complete Isla’s cheeks, I dusted mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush in Sun Love Glo, using the mark Blush Brush, to the apples of her cheeks.”

Lauren Conrad looks glowing at the book signing for her new tome L.A. Candy at the Grove in L.A. Her makeup artist, Amy Nadine, gives us the scoop on scoring her killer complexion.

“Lauren and I wanted to create a look that was still her signature style with even more sophistication as an author.”

First they applied a tinted moisturizer, try Fake Bake Radiance Tinted Moisturizer, and then used a highlighter under eyes and above cheekbones.

“To create her California glow, I used mark Bronze Pro Bronzing Powder in Pro Glow under her cheekbones, temples, along her hairline and under her jawline, then dusted the apples of her cheeks with mark Good Glowing Mosaic Blush Chica.”

You can try I-Blush Powder Blush Trio to get a variety of tones for depth and contouring.

A pinky-neutral gloss and you’re good to go!

Get The GaGa Make-Over

Friday, June 5th, 2009

lady gaga makeup

Although Lady GaGa has a pretty outrageous reputation her make-up is, in some ways, quite minimalist as she tends to put all of the attention on her eyes. Achieving her look is surprisingly simple and you can tone it up or down accordingly by using different amounts of eye make-up.

The Base: Start by sweeping your whole eye area in a white shimmering shadow. You don’t have to put a lot on if this is for a day look, but if it’s for a night out feel free to be a bit liberal. Make sure you blend in the shadow at the corners of the eye to avoid a patchy look.

A Darker Shade of Pale: Next take a silver colour and blend this across your eye sockets to create a contrast with the white shimmer. Blending is definitely the key to this look so make sure you take the time to really work the powder in.

Charcoal: The third step with the eye shadow is to darken the outer corners of the eye. Take a dark charcoal eye shadow and blend it into the corners of your eye starting right in the outer crease. Smooth it over with an applicator for a flawless finish.

Bright Eyes: Finish off your shadow by applying a little bit of the white shimmer to the inner corners of your eyes and on the lower lash line. This will brighten the look up a bit and gives it more of a dramatic edge.

Finish your eyes with a black eyeliner across the top of the lashes and either lashings of black mascara or false eye lashes for true GaGa style. To keep the focus all on your eyes smother your lips in a clear gloss and ensure that your foundation is flawlessly applied.

Get the bronzed beauty look just in time for summer

bronze-beauty-look

The classic dilemma – you’re going to the beach or a nice summery event where you’ll get a nice tan, but you don’t have the tan yet. What’s a girl to do but fake it. Rupert Kingston, celebrity makeup artist at new <id cosmetics has shared some great tips on applying some of their best bronzing products.

Satarting with the large powder brush, apply i-bronze in the areas where the sun would naturally hit your face – the temples and cheekbones, hairline of your forehead, bridge of your nose and tip of your chin.

“What’s great about [our marbalized bronzer] is you can work your brush into different areas to get different colors,” Kingston said. “So if you need a lighter bronze you can work your brush into [one] area and if you need a darker bronze you can work your brush just into the darker area and really get a much bronzer, darker color out of it.”

He points out that “i-bronze is not orange, it has a nice blend of some peaches, some gold and some bronze tones and some cream highlighters as well.”

Next, shake a little i-dazzle shimmering loose powder out of the powder sifter and apply directly to the tops of your cheekbones close to the corner of your eyes, and blend.

“I-dazzle is the shimmering loose powder which is really nice for just applying highlights,” he said.

Next dip your large brush into the i-dazzle and apply all over your face.

“To finish the look of the bronzed beauty, I’m going to use i-gloss. We’re going to use the coco pop i-gloss which has a mirror on the back and on the inside has a light for lighting the lips up with.”

And there you have it, a beautiful bronze look without stepping foot in the sun.

A boon for do-it-yourself beauty

Friday, May 1st, 2009

The tough economic times have meant fewer salon visits for many, I know it has for me. So at-home hair color and manicures are becoming the norm. While salons are surely suffering, drug-store beauty brands like Boots in the UK and CVS in America are reaping the benefits.

Categories that are typically “flat” in retail-industry parlance, that don’t see much grown beyond inflation, are seeing double-digit growth for the first time in years despite the economic downturn. This just proves that women won’t go without their beauty rituals, they’ll just find a cheaper way to achieve the near-same results.

CVS has seen a 10% increase in the nail care category as women have to forego or cut down on salon manicures. Nail color is always an easy place to save as you can get a hot color for the season at a low price. Who’s really going to know if you have that exact orange in the pages of Vogue – and maybe it will set you apart to have a different shade!

In fact, nail color in general is up 17% from last year. Sally Hansen in particular is up 28% overall, 41% in nail color and treatments up 6% with top sellers including Double Duty Strengthening Top and Base Coat and Miracle Nail Cure.

For some tips on at-home pedicures for sexy summer feet, check out this article.

Other areas seeing improvement are at-home hair color and waxing products, both grew from anywhere from 6% to 7.5% since last year. To keep your haircolor lasting longer in the summer sun, click here.
