Beauty Inspiration – The Runaways Biopic

I wouldn’t try to recreate the feathered hair or “rock and roll mullet” – look what happened to Kristin Stewart. But, late 70’s – 80’s makeup is awesomely experimental and unafraid of color, and The Runaways Biopic appears to try to emulate it down to every last streak of blush. Joan Jett and the original band are seen above, and then you can check out Kristin Stewart and Dakota Fanning in a teaser preview for the movie here.
To attempt this look, I advise what I do with any bold or experimental look – one feature at a time. Don’t do the cheeks and the eyes and a bold lip. The super contoured blush is probably the hardest to pull off. We’re used to looking for blush that mimics the natural color of the flush of our cheeks. Not so in the late 70’s!
Cheeks
I think a blusher stick like NARS The Multiple is ideal for creating this streaky look (see Dakota Fanning in the trailer). Again, it’s hard to even find colors like the ones they used back then, but I think your best bets for The Multiple are Malibu or Maui. Apply the blush heavily from the apples of your cheek slanted up your cheek bone to the outside of your eye. Then blend down to just under your cheekbone.
Lips
The lips are a little easier to create. Pick the loudest, most obnoxious dark pink shade you can find and make it matte. Try Bed Head Girls Just Want It Lipstick in Fun. It’s more moisturizing than any of the formulas they might have used back then, but you don’t want to destroy your lips in this process.
Eyes
Your first thought is blue eye shadow, no? Check out the awesome blue and teal in this Bed Head Quad Shadow – perfect for what we’re going for. Apply all the way from lid to brow bone, accentuating the crease of the eye. Use a wet flat brush to apply the same color as eyeliner as well.
